Christopher Barnes joined the Chapin faculty in 2004 and teaches Latin and Greek. He earned bachelor's degrees in history (with distinction) and classics from the University of Washington and his A.M. and Ph.D. in Classical Studies from the University of Michigan. He has given papers at the annual meetings of the Classical Association of the Mid-West and South, at the Society for Classical Studies and at the Association of Ancient Historians. Dr. Barnes has excavated in Italy at Fregellae, Fabrateria Nova and Pompeii, worked on Greek papyri in Germany and Jordan and taught at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome. He won a Whiting Foundation award for excellence in teaching and has published a book, papyri, translations, articles, and book reviews. He has chaperoned and led Chapin student and faculty trips to Italy and Greece and served as advisor to participants in the Student Global Leadership Institute at the Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii. When not teaching, Dr. Barnes enjoys music and cooking. He is married and a proud father of a biracial teenage son.
