Teaching Approach

Faculty in the Lower School are experienced and dynamic educators who are dedicated to helping students achieve their potential. By motivating and nurturing their desire to learn in a safe and supportive environment, that develops compassion and mutual respect, our students blossom into their vibrant, confident, most authentic selves.

Mindful of how a child's academic, social, and emotional skills develop, we create a learning environment responsive to students' strengths and needs and appreciate and accommodate their diverse learning styles. Each teacher builds positive relationships with their students and ensures that children experience a sense of belonging and are active participants as individuals and as members of collaborative groups.

By designing lessons that ignite students’ curiosity, teachers enable students to ask questions and participate in empowering activities that build foundational skills and conceptual understanding. Through hands-on and interdisciplinary experiences, students discuss and integrate content to make meaningful connections. Each child recognizes that the Lower School is a place where their work is valued and respected.

Our faculty value collaboration and engagement with colleagues across grades and disciplines, and they model this for students. We strive to educate the whole child and attend to their social, emotional, academic, and physical well-being. No matter the subject, teachers help students achieve their potential, infusing the Chapin learning experience with curiosity, joy and enthusiasm.
