With Joy and Gratitude, Chapin Celebrates Thanksgiving

Throughout the month of November, members of the Chapin community demonstrated their compassion and generosity by participating in the annual school-wide food drive. This year, Chapin filled 54 boxes with canned and packaged food and raised nearly $1,500 to purchase 55 turkeys. The food was donated to the New York Common Pantry, the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House and Union Settlement, three local organizations that support hungry and food-insecure New Yorkers. In addition, students forwent lunchtime desserts for two days so the School could donate them to the food drive.

On November 16, 19 and 20, Chapin’s traditional Thanksgiving Assemblies honored the holiday through songs, reflections, and a beautiful Native American prayer, while raising awareness about the worldwide crisis of hunger and food insecurity, which has an impact on 40 million people in the United States alone, including 1.3 million New York City residents.

The poised Lower School girls, wearing handmade “harvest hats” adorned with construction-paper fruits and vegetables, processed down the Assembly Room aisle, filling the stage and risers with a sea of spectacular color. In a special tradition, a group of younger students delivered bowls of produce, representing nature’s abundant bounty, to three Upper School students who waited, with their arms outstretched, at the front of the room.

Thanks to Chef Leo Goltser, Director of Food Services Evamarie Deevy and the entire food services staff, Chapin’s students and professional community members were treated to a delicious pre-Thanksgiving lunch on November 16, complete with turkey and all the fixings and several varieties of pie.
