The Lower School Takes on the Marathon

This week, our Lower School students held their annual Gator Dashes in P.E. For this event inspired by the New York City Marathon, LS P.E. teachers adapt the race for our young athletes and spend the month of October training. The goal is to strengthen the girls’ endurance and foster their sportsmanship by encouraging one another throughout the process. Each grade ran a different event; Class 3 ran a “Mini-Marathon” running 26.2 laps around the Athletic Center, Class 2 held a “Half-Marathon” with 13 laps of the AC, Class 1 finished 10 laps for their “10K” and Kindergarten ran 5 laps for a “5K” event.

In each race, which took place during their regular P.E. classes, every student had a partner counting her laps, cheering her on and telling her when it was time to take a final victory lap. The well-adorned finish line, created by the LS P.E. instructors, was  a celebratory arch with Chapin Gator pillars and colorful pendant flags. Teachers across the LS joined the classes to help cheer on the runners and celebrate their accomplishments.

Be sure to congratulate our young runners for their endurance and sportsmanship in P.E. this week!
