After a two-year hiatus of in-person performances, Upper School Dance Club returned to the stage with energetic, enthralling and show-stopping recitals on March 3, 4 and 5.
Thirty-six students from Classes 8-12 debuted their original choreography which spanned a wide variety of genres including modern, tap and hip hop. This electric show was the culmination of months of dedicated practice and the students’ joy was on clear display for their live audiences. (There was also a livestream option for anyone who couldn’t attend the event.)
With the addition of colorful lights and catchy music, the solo, duo and ensemble artists transformed the Assembly Room to a mesmeric scene.
One of Chapin’s most beloved after-school offerings, Dance Club has been a staple since its origin over 80 years ago. One Class 10 dancer shared, “Ms. Rutledge [Sarah Rutledge, Head of US Arts & Integration and Dance Club Director] creates a one-of-a-Chapin-kind environment where students from all different grades and levels of experience can come together to build community, generate meaning and express themselves through a dancer's lens.”
“One of my favorite parts of Dance Club is tech week,” said a senior member of the club. “Even though we're together for long hours every afternoon, it's so much fun to hang out with everyone, see the pieces slowly form on stage and do all the pre-show rituals together. We really have a blast. Dance Club is a great way to bond with students in other grades and by the end of the winter, it feels just like one big family.”
