Following Class 7’s exciting field trip to Philadelphia in early October, Middle School French Teacher Ayaovi Sobo designed a project to deepen her students’ learning experiences and connect them to the French language.
“Quel est l’objectif de votre projet?” (What is your project objective?) Madame Sobo asked the group of seventh graders.
The answer, the students discovered, was to write an article (en Français) about their favorite place or activity in Philly including Le marché de Reading Terminal, Le dîner croisière, Les moments passés à l’hôtel, Le musée de la révolution américaine, Le tour à pied (l’Allée Elfreth), Le musée national de la Liberté, L’institut Franklin, La soirée cinéma, Le pénitencier and Le dîner à Maggiano.
The students were asked to include all elements of a news article (headline, captivating subheading, photos, etc.) and present their work to the class.
“Practice saying your words carefully before the presentation so your audience can understand your French clearly,” Madame Sobo underscored. Their teacher also showed the girls how to use an online French dictionary for words they were unsure about.
“This dictionary will also tell you if the word is masculine or feminine,” Madame Sobo explained, noting that the students would need to use proper conjugation.
Jumping right in, the students pulled up Canva and began crafting their designs. Madame Sobo spent time with each girl, helping to answer any questions and offering suggestions and feedback.
“Make sure you’re using complete sentences,” she said, emphasizing proper spelling and using accent marks.
In subsequent classes, each student presented her creative work, with some even incorporating quotes in French from classmates. Each presentation ended with compliments from their peers!
