A Historic "Twelfth Night"

On February 27, 28 and 29, a talented group of Upper School students — a cast of 15 and eight crew members — brought Shakespeare’s enduring comedy, “Twelfth Night,” to life through unforgettable performances, a vibrant set and original music by Music teacher Elizabeth Adler. The exhilarating 2020 production in the Black Box Theater also made Chapin history!

Directed by Drama teacher Robert Thaxton-Stevenson, this year’s lively send-up marked the centennial of Chapin’s esteemed Drama program, which first began in 1920 with, fittingly enough, an energetic rendition of “Twelfth Night.”

To celebrate this auspicious occasion, more than 25 alumnae, from the Class of 1961 through Class of 2018, returned on Friday, February 28, to 100 East End Avenue, where they attended a pre-show reception with faculty in the Berendsen Room.

The alumnae were asked to share a memory from their time in Chapin Drama during a “drama circle,” a tradition that has been an integral part of Chapin’s Drama program for at least 40 years. They also caught up with one another and connected with their former teachers before settling in to enjoy the play with parents and other members of the Chapin community.

By all appearances, the audience was entranced. Alumnae noted their appreciation for the opportunity to participate in such a momentous milestone for their School. “What a delight it was being at Chapin tonight for the lovely reception and the excellent production of ‘Twelfth Night,’” remarked Irene Fulrath ’63, adding that she had played the character of Malvolio in Chapin’s production of the play some 58 years ago.

After the beaming cast took their bows, the students participated in a post-show “talk back,” which allowed the cast, crew and adult collaborators to reflect on the process and to answer questions from the audience, who were delighted to share in the evening’s joyous excitement.

The visitors also admired the display boards outside of the Black Box Theater that were embellished with archival photographs from a variety of memorable Chapin productions. The final performance of “Twelfth Night,” on Saturday afternoon, capped off the show’s terrific run.

Congratulations cast and crew! Here’s to the next 100 years of Chapin’s show-stopping Drama performances!
