In April 2023, Isobel Porteous ’20, a leader in the student-run Stanford Student Space Initiative (SSI) successfully launched a satellite on SpaceX’s Transporter 7 rideshare mission. 51 payloads were delivered to orbit on a Falcon 9 rocket, including on “passenger” called Sapling-2. The Sapling spacecraft was designed and built by Isobel and her Stanford student group and hosts a machine learning enabled Earth imaging camera. With the satellite in orbit, the team is able to receive open-source telemetry data as it circles the globe every 90 minutes.
