Back to School!: Alumnae Return for an Evening of Learning

Filled with pride and nostalgia, Chapin alumnae enjoy returning to the school that shaped their lives. Although 100 East End Avenue is ever evolving, the strength of the faculty and the engaging array of course selections remain constants. On the evening of February 8, nearly 100 alumnae from the classes of 1950 to 2010 had the opportunity to re-discover their scholarly and artistic selves (uniforms optional) as participants in Chapin's popular "Back to School!" night, which has been an alumnae tradition for many years.

Each alumna picked one class to attend from eight offerings taught by Chapin teachers. The hands-on classes, which were spread out around the School, included the scientific ("Principles of Engineering" taught by Prasad Akavoor and "There's No Pressure Like No Pressure" taught by George Lakis); the historic ("A Walk on the Wild Side: The City in the 70s" taught by Luc Hotaling and Esther Krell and "The Silk Road: Trade and Transformation" taught by Lisa Moy); the artistic ("Story Drama: The Silence of Mary Parker" taught by Sarah Bellantoni and "Discover the Magic and Joy of Watercolors" taught by Duane Neil); and language-focused ("Introduction to Chinese" taught by Lin Wang). In addition, a talented group of Class 12 students shared their impressive Individual Study projects with the alumnae in a presentation moderated by Ilana Pergman '86.

After an hour of enjoyable learning, classes were dismissed, and the alumnae gathered for a lively reception. With wide smiles and hearty laughs, the women mingled with their teachers and compared notes about the evening's classes (all received high marks). Everyone seemed to delight in this fun and informative "Back to School!" experience.
