When Chapin alumnae visited the Morgan Library at the beginning of October, they discovered that part of the Morgan's collection lies closer to home than expected: Some of the pieces on display were donated by a fellow alumna, the late Mary Flagler Cary '19.
About 40 people from Chapin, including alumnae and their guests, enjoyed a mid-day tour of the library, which was recently reopened after a significant expansion. The Morgan was formerly the private home and library of the financier Pierpont Morgan, who died in 1913, and it was designed to resemble an Italian Renaissance-style palazzo by the renowned architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White. The Morgan commissioned the architect Renzo Piano to renovate the library and add 75,000 square feet of space, creating more room for its collection of old-master drawings and prints, illuminated and historical manuscripts and early printed books. The completed space reopened to the public in April.
