Alumna to be honored by the National Eating Disorders Association

Leslie Lipton, a member of the Class of 2004, will receive the Young Advocate Award from the National Eating Disorders Association on November 29. She is being honored for her “high-profile advocacy for eating-disorder awareness and prevention on college campuses,” according to a statement from the association.

Ms. Lipton is an eating-disorder survivor and the author of the novel Unwell, which chronicles a young woman’s struggles with anorexia. She began advocacy work with the National Eating Disorders Association shortly after her novel was published in November 2006, and she has spoken at numerous colleges and high schools.

“I talk about my own story, how I recovered and what I have learned through recovery,” Ms. Lipton said. “I’m touched that the NEDA would recognize me [with the award], because I never do any of this to get an award. I work for eating-disorder advocacy because it has touched my life personally and because there are too few survivors willing to stand up and speak out.”
