A Night of Learning

A Night of Learning

On Wednesday, February 3rd, over ninety of Chapin's alumnae returned to 100 East End Avenue for the sixth annual Back to School! Over the course of the evening, Chapin teachers offered classes in a range of subjects and brought together alumnae from near and far to do what they do best: learn!

In the gym, alumnae joined Mike Davis, Head of Upper School Physical Education, and Nick DePaola, Physical Education teacher and Varsity Badminton coach, for a rousing game of badminton. Up in the art room, alumnae eschewed rackets in favor of paintbrushes under the guidance of Duane Neil, Head of the Art Department, for a course called "Come Discover the Magic and Joy of Watercolors." In the library, Upper School students regaled their audience with tales of their exciting projects in the sciences for the course "Chapin Girls at the Forefront: Science and Technology" hosted by Director of Studies Ilana Pergam '86. Meanwhile, alumnae joined Lauren Tartaglia, History teacher, for a class on the history of spies and surveillance in the course "ISpy: Intelligence Gathering," while English teacher Carlynn Houghton '96 led a lively seminar on World War I-era poetry for the more literarily inclined. Alumnae also looked to the stars in Prasad Akavoor and John Noble's course on Astronomy, and played "Guess Who?" and danced salsa in Ana Agón's vivacious Spanish course, "¿Spanish: Quién es?"

After class, alumnae traded stories about their experiences and caught up over Chapin's own gourmet pizza. For these women, the opportunity to go "Back to School!" was clearly a welcome and exciting one, proving that even for these accomplished former students, there's always more to learn and discover at Chapin.
