Once a conditional offer of employment has been extended, The Chapin School requires that applicants for any full-time, part-time and/or temporary position complete a background check to the satisfaction of the School, in its sole discretion. This background check is a routine measure designed to safeguard our students and the entire School community, and will include, but is not limited to, a criminal history check, education verification and a social media check.

Although a disqualification is possible in the event an applicant has been convicted of a crime, in accordance with federal, state and local laws, a previous conviction does not automatically or necessarily disqualify an applicant from consideration for employment with The Chapin School. Depending on a variety of factors (for example, the nature of the position, the nature of the conviction, age of the candidate when the illegal activity occurred and other criteria), the candidate may still be eligible for employment with The Chapin School. However, if an applicant attempts to withhold, or falsify, information pertaining to previous convictions, or discrepancies that come from the education verification the employee will be disqualified from further employment consideration in any position with the School due to falsification of an application.

An offer of employment may be extended to an applicant prior to the completion of the criminal conviction and/or background check. However, the applicant’s first day of work in the position must not be prior to the satisfactory completion of the criminal conviction and/or background check. 

Background checks will include:

• Social Security (validates the applicant's social security number, date of birth and former addresses)
• Prior Employment Verification
• Multi-County Criminal History
• Federal Criminal History
• Education Verification
• Social Media Account Check
• Personal and Professional References (Minimum of three) 
• In addition to the above, candidates for all positions are also required to provide their fingerprints as part of this background check process.

All current employees of the School are required to re-authorize the School to conduct a supplemental background check concerning the same criteria listed above every four years of consecutive employment with the School.

Please understand that the background check process will not look into an applicant or employee’s financial records, health information or any personal information outside of the social media account check. In addition, the School’s consideration of any information contained in a completed background check will be subject to, and comply with, all applicable federal, state and local law, including, but not limited to, each of the federal and New York Fair Credit Reporting Act.
