Student Work

Middle School students, beginning in Class 4, learn through an interdisciplinary approach that allows them to work with a variety of experienced teachers throughout the school day. As the girls take clear steps toward becoming independent and self-directed learners, they are engaged by a wealth of material that will fascinate them through their Middle School years and beyond.

Some examples of Middle School class projects include:

Class 4

What happens when three drops of red paint are added to nine drops of white paint? Class 4 students worked on a collaborative and cross-curricular math and art project to learn the answer to that question. This was the beginning of proportional thinking without using the words ‘ratio’ and ‘proportion,’ which are introduced in Class 6. Click HERE to find out more.

Class 5

Students expanded upon their research and observations of oyster cultivation with a field trip to New York Harbor School on Governor's Island. The oysters are a powerful example of providing students with opportunities to become citizen scientists by making contributions to ongoing research that can impact the long-term health of our local environment.

Class 6

Class 6 is the first year in which students have the opportunity to study a language of their choice. They may continue with Spanish or choose either Chinese or French. First-year French students engaged in an exercise to kick off a weather-related project, which complements another weather unit they had been studying for the past several lessons.

Class 7

Chapin's Middle School Librarian, Natasha Goldberg, worked with Class 7 students and their teachers to instruct students in gathering and documenting their research. The students practiced building a bibliography page, a skill that will be essential to writing well-researched papers later on in Upper School.
