Chapin prepares aid for Haiti

As Haitians struggle to survive in the aftermath of the earthquake that devastated the country on January 12, aid is flowing in from across the world. Chapin is doing what it can to help, too.

Students, parents, faculty and staff are participating in a threefold effort to assist the recovery process. First, Chapin teacher Martin Piñiero, Chapin athletic trainer Tom Quigley and Trinity School teacher Pablo Acosta coordinated a drive for medical supplies, which went to a group called AFYA that was collecting them. The supplies were shipped off to Haiti on January 28.

Chapin students are also helping to raise money for the International Rescue Committee, a nonprofit agency that offers relief to refugees and victims of natural disasters. Students will be selling key chains that read, “In union there is strength,” which is the motto on the Haitian flag. The International Rescue Committee will use the sale’s proceeds for food, medical supplies and other resources.

The physical education department and Parents’ Association are co-managing the third part of Chapin’s response: They have collected and boxed clothing that is as best-suited as possible to what is needed in Haiti. It will be delivered to the country soon.
