Leadership

There are numerous formal and informal opportunities for girls to develop strong decision-making and leadership skills in the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools, from speaking in public to leading assemblies to running for an elected office. Students take active roles in having an effect on their own school community, not only filling positions of leadership but also creating new ones. They also make sure that all leadership roles are occupied by the most capable candidates. For example, with the help of the life skills faculty committee, students have revised the Upper School election process so that it demands more of candidates than simply being nominated. Candidates must submit a statement of their intention to run and must then speak to their peers about the qualities they offer as leaders. As a result, the girls who run Chapin's student organizations are accomplished, effective representatives of their class and their school. Chapin’s focus on self-advocacy, accomplished through public-speaking training, the PrePARE program and the culture of the school itself, produces students who speak with confidence and who have a strong voice in community affairs.
