Faculty-Student Advising

Faculty-student advising is a part of the Chapin curriculum that complements and supports the life skills program. Each girl in Classes 4 through 12 becomes part of a group of advisees, led by one faculty adviser who remains with the group throughout the school year. The teachers who act as advisers receive ongoing training in listening techniques, learn about developmental issues that relate to their advisees’ age group and become skilled at working with groups and resolving crises. A student's faculty adviser is most often someone who teaches at her grade level and has many opportunities to see her in school or in class during a typical week. Advising takes many forms, from structured group activities to one-on-one meetings, the latter of which can deal with academic issues or social and emotional topics. The class supervisors and school counselors oversee the advising program and serve as resources to the faculty advisers. The program, the recent recipient of a grant from the E.E. Ford Foundation, continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of our students.
