Who makes planned gifts to Chapin?
Donors who make planned gifts to Chapin become members of the Maria Bowen Chapin Legacy Society, a group that includes Miss Chapin herself. Below, one alumna who has joined explains her decision.
Edith Sterrett Hornor ’47: Making a wise investment
Edith “Dedie” Sterrett Hornor entered Chapin in Class 1 and, by the time she graduated in 1944, could recite the most important dates in history, tell tales of her adventures on the Green team and appreciate Miss Stringfellow’s sense of humor. From Chapin she took vibrant memories and life-long friendships, and she is a loyal and dedicated alumna. She and her husband, DeWitt, have traveled the world, but have always remained devoted to Chapin.
Mrs. Hornor beams when she speaks of Chapin. “I was there for 12 years and I simply loved it,” she said. “Of my friends today, a large part of them were my classmates whom I see constantly. Most of our friends who come to our home are my Chapin pals. They’re just great people. Some of them I’ve known for almost 70 years.”
Mrs. Hornor and her husband joined the Maria Bowen Chapin Legacy Society in 1986 when they gave their first planned gift by contributing to Chapin’s pooled income fund. Mr. Hornor recalled: “When the pooled income fund was set up, it was a great thing for us. We wanted to give income to a friend, but we were afraid we would forget to sit down and write a check every month. This was a very convenient and tax-advantageous way to give someone an income and help the school.” He went on to say, and Mrs. Hornor agreed, “If you offer an alumna something that does what she or her husband wants it to do, and it helps the school, it makes everybody feel good.”
The Hornors have continued their generous support of Chapin and believe that a planned gift is a wonderful way to provide for the school’s future. “Chapin is such a big part of my life,” Mrs. Hornor said. “It’s just like home.”
