Special Funds
David Alger Web Site Fund
Established by the trustees in October 2001 in memory of David Alger, father of Cristina ’98 and Chapin trustee, to fund a David Alger Web site that contains two databases: The History Resource Center: U.S. and The History Resource Center: Modern World, creating a virtual library for the study of history in the United States as well as the world in the 20th century and beyond.
Ted Ammon Class of 2008 Memorial Fund
Established in December 2001 by an anonymous group of parents of the Class of 2008 in memory of R. Theodore Ammon, father of Alexa Ammon ’08. Donations to this fund were used by the music department to refurbish handbells and other instruments.
Margaret Emerson Bailey Memorial Fund
Established by the Class of 1925 in memory of their teacher, to provide awards for creative writing.
Mildred Jeanmaire Berendsen Endowment Fund
Established to honor Mrs. Berendsen, headmistress from 1959 to 1993, upon her retirement, this fund provides support for faculty salaries, scholarships and program enrichment.
Frances Bloom Memorial Fund
Established in 2007 in memory of Mrs. Bloom, this fund provides grants to faculty members to further their educational and teacher-training skills during the academic year and/or summer months.
Haven R. Bloom Summer Gymnastics Award Fund
Established in October 1999 in memory of Haven Bloom ’02. Awarded each year to a talented Chapin gymnast to enable her to attend a summer gymnastics program to further her study in the sport.
Haven R. Bloom Scholarship Fund
Established by the trustees in memory of Haven Bloom ’02 in May 1999, this scholarship is used for qualified Upper School students.
Book Fair Fund
Contains monies which were contributed by a parent to provide funding for financial aid students to purchase books at the Book Fair.
Electra Webb Bostwick ’29 Fund for Visiting Artists
Established by the family of Electra Webb Bostwick ’29 to strengthen Chapin’s program in the arts, both within the school and in the city.
Helen Watson Buckner ’35 Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 1993 in memory of Helen Watson Buckner ’35, alumna, parent and trustee.
Nicky Stout Chapion ’52 Lecture Series Fund
Just as Nicky Chapin broadened the world of her Chapin students, this lecture series established in her honor in 2001 expands the horizons of future generations of students.
Anne Cox ’36 and Mazie Cox ’63 Special Emergency Fund
Students with needs beyond those met by financial aid are supported through this fund
created in March 1998.
Dance Department Fund
Provides funds for dance department expenditures.

Provides underwriting for various gatherings for alumnae and parents.

the Chapin Centennial Campaign
Established in September 1999 by Mary Gordon Roberts ’56 and her father, Albert H. Gordon, to create an endowment for faculty salaries.
Polly Rousmaniere Gordon ’28 Fellowship Fund
Established in 1981 in memory of Mrs. Gordon, alumna, parent and trustee, to provide funds for faculty summer professional enrichment.
Anne Morgan Harbison ’83 Memorial Fund
Established in memory of Anne Morgan Harbison ’83 to provide a prize that is awarded each year to the member-in-charge of Middle School Self-Government.

This endowment fund for scholarships for Lower School students was established in April 1999 by the trustees in honor of Diane Irish, the retiring head of the Lower School.
Life Skills Fund
Gifts to this fund provide monies for the life skills program at Chapin.
The Katharine Walker Mackenty ’23 Archives Funds
Established in August 2004 in memory of Katharine Walker MacKenty ’23, Chapin's historian for nearly 30 years. Contributions provide funding for the support of Chapin's archives.
Magowan Art & Music Fund
Established in 2000, this fund was created to enhance the library collection available to students in the Solomon Art and Music Alcove.
Elsie Rutgers Marshall Fund
In 1906, Elsie Rutgers Marshall began a teaching career at what was then known as Miss Chapin’s School for Girls. Dedicating her whole life to teaching history at Chapin, Miss Marshall influenced young New Yorkers for 46 years. As a tribute to this exceptional educator, this fund was established in 2001 by family, friends and students.
Keith Mathews Memorial Book Fund
Established in February 2004 in memory of Keith Mathews, son of Jay Mathews, Chapin’s director of finance. Gifts to this fund are used to purchase books for the library on topics of Keith’s interest.
Carolynn Matthews ’87 Fund
Established in 1990 by her family and friends to provide scholarship aid and support for the arts program.
Jean Flagler Matthews ’28 Flower Fund
G.F. Robert Hanke and his family established this fund in fall 1999 in honor of his mother, Jean Flagler Matthews, to ensure that flowers will always bloom in the greenhouse.
Virginia Moffat Nickerson ’44 Fund
This fund, which makes grants to students in financial need, was established in 2000 by Mrs. Nickerson’s classmates and friends in her memory.
Parents of Children of Color Fund
This fund benefits Parents of Children of Color, a group that fosters a diverse cultural experience for all students and aims to enhance the social exchange among Chapin community members of all backgrounds.
Jean Houston Plum Scholarship Fund
Established in February 2001 by Carol Plum ’76 in honor of her mother, a devoted and involved Chapin parent, to provide scholarship assistance to students.
Pooled Income Fund
Established in March 1986 to provide endowment funds for the school.
Ruth Proffitt ’47 Faculty Endowment Fund
In February 1999, the trustees established the Ruth Proffitt Faculty Endowment Fund in recognition of Miss Proffitt’s many years of devotion to The Chapin School and to her students.
The Schrade Family Endowment Fund for the Enhancement of the Quality of Music
This endowment provides Chapin with the resources it needs to maintain its high standard of musical education and performance by supporting curricular development through visiting musicians, instrumental and teaching expenditures, and faculty study and travel.
Jon Schweitzer Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in June 2002 in memory of Chapin’s beloved “Chef Jon” to provide scholarship funds for students.
Senior Class Angel Fund
This fund helps members of the senior class pay for any extras they might not be able to afford, such as a prom dress, tickets for the prom or miscellaneous incidentals.
Special Gifts Fund
Provides temporary scholarship assistance to families in need, underwriting for guest speakers at the school, and underwriting for various functions and school activities.

The Charles Henry Leach, II Foundation made a gift to the Chapin Centennial Campaign to be used for scholarships.

C. V. Starr Scholarship Fund
This permanent scholarship endowment provides assistance to students on the basis of merit and need.
Ethel Grey Stringfellow Library Fund
Established in memory of Ethel Grey Stringfellow, headmistress from 1935 to 1959, for library support.
Hope Babette Tang ’79 Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established to honor the life and memory of Hope Babette Tang ’79, this fund was created in November 1998 to help young underprivileged girls receive an education at her school.
Technology Fund
Established to help maintain Chapin’s media equipment and computer systems.
The Sandra J. Theunick Exchange Program Fund
Established in 2003 by the Parents’ Association of The Chapin School in honor of former Head of School Sandra J. Theunick. The fund provides underwriting for a student in need who wishes to participate in an exchange program abroad. This is to include the London Exchange Program started by Ms. Theunick.
The Margaret Yates Thorne ’73 & Nathan C. Thorne Scholarship Fund
The Yates/Thorne Scholarship Fund was established in 1998 to provide financial aid to students who need assistance.
Maud T. Walker Endowment Fund for Faculty Support
Established in April 2003 for faculty support with a bequest from Maud T. Walker, mother of four Chapin alumnae.
Cynthia Wang Endowment Fund for the Study of Chinese Culture
Given by Chapin parent Charlene Wang in memory of her late mother, Cynthia Wang, this fund will expand the knowledge and awareness of Chinese culture among students at The Chapin School.
The William B. Weaver Fund
Created in memory of William B. Weaver by his wife and daughters to honor his devotion to his children and to educating all children, this fund benefits students who would not otherwise be able to attend Chapin.
Sally Weld Webster ’58 Memorial Music Fund
Established in honor of Sally Weld Webster ’58 to provide funds for the support of the music department.
Mary Norman Whiteside Memorial Fund
To honor Mary Norman Whiteside, former head of the English department and head of the Upper School, who died in December 2005, this fund has been established. It will support the English department’s needs and special programs and provide the library with books that will bear her name.
