The story of our campaign

The roots of Together We Will: The Campaign for Chapin reach back to four major initiatives that emerged from the Board of Trustees’ 2005 strategic plan: to improve faculty support, enhance the curriculum, bolster the financial aid system and ensure that Chapin has the physical facilities needed for its improved programs to thrive.

At the heart of the strategic plan lay what has always been, and continues to be, most important to Chapin: the students and the faculty. With them in mind, the board set a $75-million fund-raising goal and launched a campaign to shore up Chapin’s endowment. A strong endowment, which provides critical funds to close the gap between actual school expenses and income from tuition and Annual Giving, is essential for Chapin to support its programs and be financially solvent in an uncertain economy.

At the helm of the campaign are two dedicated trustees: alumna Tanya Ryk Friedman ’90 and parent Frank R. Mori. Their efforts as campaign co-chairs, combined with those of energetic volunteers, have met with unprecedented support. We invite everyone connected to Chapin to join us as we strive to reach and exceed the $75-million mark.

Below, you will learn more about how the endowment fund-raising campaign will help Chapin to remain one of the premier girls' schools in the world.

The campaign's four principal objectives

Faculty Support
  • An enhanced compensation program, including more competitive benefits and retirement plans, to attract and retain top educators
  • Academic fellowships for teachers to develop new courses and to incorporate innovative research into their classrooms
  • Funding for professional development, advanced degree programs and study-abroad trips, which give teachers the chance to expand their knowledge in their subject areas and bring new lessons back to Chapin
Academic Programs
  • A global perspective throughout the curriculum that will inform girls about their world and include programs that allow them to travel abroad
  • Expanded offerings in physics, biology, chemistry, engineering and robotics
  • More partnerships with outside organizations that link Chapin students with internships and extended learning programs
  • World languages to be offered from Kindergarten through Class 12
Financial Aid
  • A greater number of full and partial grants for talented students who are deserving of a Chapin education, regardless of their financial need
  • A commitment to raise the proportion of recipients from 16 to 20 percent
  • Funding for aid recipients to take part in special programs such as overseas study
  • Heightened efforts to ensure the Chapin community reflects the diversity of New York City and, on a broader scale, the world in which our students live
Building and Facilities
  • New centers for science, the visual arts, world languages and student services, giving students and faculty increased support in those programs
  • New classrooms and offices that encourage collaboration between teachers and students
  • Increased endowment ensures that Chapin's facilties can support future academic programs, completing further upgrades and renovations when necessary
