The music curriculum instills in students a broad range of music literacy skills, aural discrimination, and a love of music. Through the study of world music and the compositions of the Masters, from medieval through contemporary, students in Chapin’s singing-based program sing, play, improvise, move, compose and listen to music. The program’s foundation in preparation, presentation and practice produces technically astute and creative singers, composers, arrangers and instrumentalists.

Our hope is that Chapin students develop a lifelong intellectual curiosity about diverse musical traditions and the cultures in which they are found. Musical skills learned in grades Kindergarten through 7 are applied and enhanced during the Upper School years; the curriculum follows a sequence based on the work of 20th-century music educators and composers Zoltan Kodály, and Carl Orff.
