Fine Arts
Students find myriad ways to express themselves:
performing a monologue, singing in an a
cappella group, choreographing
a modern dance piece, creating a painting, sculpture, video or photographic study.
At Chapin, these explorations are essential to the education of
our students. Through the study of art, dance, drama and music,
students build an understanding of themselves and of the world. In developing practical and analytical skills in the arts, each
girl finds her voice and takes pride in her individuality.
The art, dance, drama and music departments
are separate and count among their numbers faculty who excel in
each discipline. Each department develops both a curricular program
and extracurricular experiences to match the needs of all students.
The four fine arts departments also function as a coordinated
whole, with the overarching artistic education of each student in
mind.
Chapin's
outstanding arts facilities include a drawing and painting studio,
an art room devoted to Lower School students, a darkroom, a woodworking
room and ceramics studio, a dance studio, a
state-of-the-art black box theater and a choral room. The fine arts departments take advantage of New York as a resource as well, giving students access to working artists and art institutions around the city.
Respected for the intellectual
challenges they offer, the arts at Chapin also provide avenues for self-expression
and the kind of collaborative learning that is important for
girls in
developing their identities and confidence. The arts are the lenses
through which they view the world; they become confident
performers and makers of art as well as discerning audience members.
