Head of School
Dr. Patricia T. Hayot, a consummate educator with more than 30 years of experience, is the sixth head of Chapin. She worked for 18 years as the head of the Columbus School for Girls, a pre-kindergarten through Class 12 institution in Ohio. Before that, Dr. Hayot led the International School of Paris for nine years. She has also taught French, in which she is fluent, and history. She is now in her fourth year at Chapin's helm.
A former Klingenstein Fellow at Teachers College of Columbia University, Dr. Hayot has held leadership positions in several independent schools associations, both in the United States and abroad. She holds a Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Michigan and earned both bachelors and masters degrees in political science and education at Marquette University. Here are some other facts about Chapins accomplished head:
- Dr. Hayot was a trustee of the Childrens Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, for 10 years. The Childrens Hospital is an outstanding community asset and provides service regardless of ones ability to pay, she said. Fund-raising and research grants are central to the health of this hospital. I loved my work on the board, knowing that children were being served while research was advancing the understanding of treatment.
- She is married to Fernand Hayot, who holds a doctorate in theoretical physics. She has a grown daughter and son. Her daughter holds a masters degree in public policy and worked for the Womens Institute for Policy Research in Washington, D.C.; she recently graduated from the law school at American University. Dr. Hayot's son is an English professor at the University of Arizona at Tucson and recently published a book, Chinese Dreams, with The University of Michigan Press.
- If she could travel anywhere in the world, Dr. Hayot would join her husband for a tour of the Silk Road. She would also like to visit Mayan ruins in Mexico. We love discovering and making new connections between cultures and are fascinated by antiquities, she said.
- Among Dr. Hayots favorite quotations is this one from Gandhi: Learn as if you will live forever. Live as if you will die tomorrow.
