The Chapin Education Philosophy

Chapin graduates are distinguished by their advanced command of the sciences, humanities, social studies and arts, as well as by their strong values, integrity, and sense of their achievement and potential. Each girl who studies at 100 East End Avenue builds a clear understanding of herself and her world by thinking independently, working with others, and cultivating qualities such as hard work, organization, compassion, empathy and the pursuit of personal excellence and the public good.

The school’s college-preparatory curriculum takes into account the total development of each girl, from her academic progress to her social and emotional health. Through liberal arts courses, participation in athletics and clubs, exposure to the fine and performing arts, and enriching social activities, a Chapin education challenges the minds of girls and young women while providing the foundation for a lifetime of curiosity, creativity, and intellectual achievement.

Mission Statement

The Chapin School is committed to preparing young women to thrive and lead in an increasingly complex world through the pursuit of academic excellence, personal integrity, and community responsibility.

Academic Excellence and Collaborative Teaching

Chapin is built on a strong and deeply held, community-wide commitment to academic excellence within a caring environment. Essential to the achievement of this excellence is a system of collegiality developed by the faculty. Collaboration is the hallmark of the construction of the academic program, and Chapin teachers meet regularly to plan their teaching. As many different teachers as possible are assigned to the various sections of a course; then, the school provides time for those teachers to meet weekly and create a similar syllabus for each of their courses. Teachers pool their ideas and refine and improve course content and pedagogy together in every course, every year. By sharing our techniques and integrating timely changes over the years, we have preserved successful legacies and introduced creative curriculum innovations.

Why an all-girls education?

Leadership and Collaboration

At Chapin, girls are encouraged to understand the value of collaboration and cooperation. Students have a wealth of opportunities to lead — as participants in student government, by taking on key roles in class projects, as the leaders of clubs, sports teams and performing groups — but also learn the value of working with others and letting their fellow students’ views come to the forefront. We are a school that prizes kindness, respect, and consideration for others in all aspects of student life.

Social Responsibility

Maria Bowen Chapin, the school’s founder, believed that every individual has a responsibility to make a contribution to her community. This idea lives on today at Chapin as girls undertake service projects in all three divisions, beginning in Kindergarten. Students learn about ways in which they can serve others and are inspired to create service initiatives of their own. Every year, Chapin students volunteer at local hospitals, children’s shelters, public schools and senior citizens’ centers, offering their help and learning about the lives of others.

Diversity Mission Statement

Chapin is committed to diversity in its culture and its program. An equitable, inclusive community provides the best environment for learning. Chapin actively seeks families, faculty and staff who bring a range of experiences to the school. Chapin embraces and respects differences in age, ethnicity, gender, learning style, physical ability, race, religion, sexual orientation and socioeconomic class. Expecting and requiring respect for others is a hallmark of our educational process. Click here to learn more about diversity at The Chapin School.
