Computers come to class

By E. Mendelsohn

“Where did the computer room go?” asked a Chapin Lower School student on Monday. Students in the Lower School will no longer venture out to a computer-lined room for technology class with teacher Mary Beth Burns. Starting this week, as part of the Technology Integration Project (TIP), Ms. Burns will wheel a cart of laptops into their classroom for lessons and activities woven into their daily curriculum.

In keeping with its name, TIP aims to increase exposure to technology in the classroom. Some upcoming projects include making claymation-type shorts or silkscreen prints for art class or typing up reports for presentations. Students gain a wider range of learning tools and familiarity with basic skills like mouse control, switching between windows and file servers.

Technology has also entered the classroom in the form of Web pages maintained by lower school teachers and Mary Beth Burns. Teachers use basic html codes to post pictures and lesson plans on Chapin’s Web site. These pages serve to inform parents and grandparents of their daughters’ activities and allow them to reinforce lesson pedagogy at home.

The TIP program is one of the many major technology initiatives launched in the past three years. Class 6 students use laptops throughout their day; Class 7 students build computers; and Class 8 students use iPods for their foreign language classes. At Chapin, computers have become just a part of life, like using a pen.
