Hiver. Printempts. Été. Automne. Middle School French teacher Madame Léone Seltzer wrote these four words on the board for her students and then asked them to translate each. The girls quickly named each season of the year: winter, spring, summer and autumn.

Class 6 is the first year in which students have the opportunity to study a language of their choice. They may either continue with Spanish or choose either Chinese or French. These first year French students engaged in this particular exercise to kick off a weather-related project, which complements another weather unit they’ve been studying for the past several lessons.

The girls spent the first part of class providing each other with phrases associated with each season. As part of this, they were tasked with conjugating the verb Faire — “to do” in English — and applying the appropriate tenses and subjects to their phrases. After that practice, the girls began a creative project, building decorative weather-themed mobiles. In the coming weeks, the students will add elements to their mobiles to reflect their deeper knowledge of weather-related French vocabulary, phrases and verbs.
