The physical education program at Chapin provides a carefully planned curriculum that strives to foster self-esteem, promote skill acquisition and enhance physical fitness. From Kindergarten through Class 12, the curriculum features positive social interaction, teamwork, competition and fun with activities designed to develop skill competency.
Lower School students encounter a wide variety of experiences through four active days of physical education classes and gymnastics. Through a combination of team activities and small group or one-on-one instruction, students improve their balance, motor coordination, cognitive function, strength, fitness and agility. As students move from Kindergarten through Class 3, they experience track and field activities, gymnastics, cardiovascular conditioning and competitive games, laying the foundation for their future physical development.
The Middle School program is divided among gymnastics, individual and team sports, and physical fitness conditioning. Gymnastics, including instruction on the vault, balance beam, uneven bars and floor exercise, promotes confidence, strength, poise and courage. Physical education classes encourage strategic thinking, leadership, teamwork, good sportsmanship and a positive attitude toward physical activity. Students participate in a wide range of sports, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton, softball, floor hockey, fencing, team handball, field hockey and lacrosse. Project Adventure and New Games activities enhance students team-building and problem-solving capabilities.
In the Upper School, physical education teachers aspire to instill in their students an appreciation of lifelong learning and personal responsibility for ones own wellness. Classes 8 and 9 continue with skill-based instruction in familiar sports such as soccer, volleyball and basketball, as well as in the newly introduced sports of ultimate frisbee and flag football. The Class 10 through 12 program becomes more varied and elective in nature, as students help to determine the activities in which their class will participate during the year. Activities offered include team handball, yoga, strength and stretch, wiffle ball, badminton and indoor soccer. The schools two fitness rooms are used extensively for classes in weight training and aerobic workouts.
