Back to School!: Alumnae Return for Enriching Evening

When invited back to the School that shaped their lives, many Chapin alumnae jump at the opportunity to return and reconnect. One particularly popular event is the longstanding alumnae tradition Back to School! On the evening of November 1, more than 90 alumnae from the Classes of 1952 to 2012 became Chapin students again (uniforms not required!) as they enjoyed wide-ranging classes taught by Chapin’s excellent faculty.

Back to School! kicked off with a presentation by LeeAnn Black, Chair of the Board of Trustees, entitled “How It All Works: A Look Inside the Business of the Chapin School.” Next, each alumna attended one pre-selected class from six offerings taught by Chapin teachers. The captivating classes included “As Easy as ABG(amma)” taught by Catherine Bender; “Political Cartoons and the Art of Commentary” taught by Kelly Hammond; “You Can’t Say That! (Yes, You Can): An Exploration of the First Amendment” taught by Esther Krell; “Programming for Non-Programmers” taught by Tao Wang and “Blind Contour Drawing” taught by Duane Neil. In addition, four accomplished Class 12 students shared their impressive Individual Study projects with the alumnae in presentations moderated by Director of Studies Ilana Pergam ’86.

After an enthralling hour, classes were dismissed, and the alumnae came together for a reception on the second floor. As the women nibbled on delicious snacks, they caught up with their teachers and each other, comparing notes about the classes and trading stories about their Chapin years. Without a doubt, “Back to School!” earned high marks from everyone in attendance.
