Middle School (4-7)
Learning in the Middle School
In the Middle School, the disciplines of English, mathematics, history, science, and a foreign language are enriched by art, dance, drama, music, physical education and computer science. The curriculum builds on the strong foundation established in the Lower School and cultivates independent learning as the girls move up the educational ladder.
Chapin includes Class 4 in the Middle School, which gives younger children the advantage of a transitional year between the contained classroom of the elementary years and the departmental approach of the Middle School program. The well-structured, age-appropriate curriculum, which follows a natural progression from Class 4 through Class 7, stresses a core of language, literature, mathematics, history and science. Instruction in the arts, technology and physical education provide enrichment. Girls become fluent in self-expression through frequent opportunities in oral and written communication. The Middle School adopts a cumulative approach to skill-building that values process as well as product, incorporating interactive classes, daily assignments, independent and collaborative projects, and both traditional and technological research.
At every level of the Middle School, students have a voice in the life of their class, from the Junior Council to intramural athletics to speaking opportunities at school assemblies. The Middle School also instills in its students a strong sense of community service. Class 7 girls, for example, volunteer outside of Chapin as well as within it, working in the school library or archives, in the Lower School, or in neighborhood social service agencies. They also act as Big Sisters to the Class 4 students, helping their younger counterparts to adjust to life in the Middle School.
