Middle School students, beginning in Class 4, learn in a departmental approach that allows them to work with a variety of experienced teachers and to change classrooms throughout the school day. As the girls take clear steps toward becoming independent and self-directed learners, they are engaged by a wealth of material that will fascinate them through their Middle School years and beyond: the architecture of the ancient Greeks, the mathematical precision of geometry, the poetry of Shakespeare, and the intricate code and logic that lie behind every Web page. The curriculum gives students thorough exposure to the core subjects of academic life, including English, history, math, science, foreign languages, the arts and computer technology.

The Middle School program also gives students a wide range of ways to round out their academic experiences. The girls choose from more than 20 clubs and activities, volunteer both inside and outside the school building, and participate in competitive sports outside of class. In addition to their classroom work, these activities help them to cultivate the core values — respect, leadership, understanding, kindness, appreciation, patience, courage and honesty — that characterize the Chapin Middle School experience.
