Girls in the Lower School learn with joy and enthusiasm every day. The program offers many opportunities for them to develop their potential in a variety of areas. They acquire the building blocks of literacy through listening, speaking, reading and writing. They develop an understanding of numerical patterns and relationships with hands-on activities. They test the scientific method through experiments that put them in touch with the living and physical world, and they gain insights into their own community and the communities of others. They experience their multicultural world by learning to speak and sing in Spanish. Girls work together and with their teachers on activities and projects that build a strong foundation for learning.

As students progress from Kindergarten through Class 3, they demonstrate their natural creativity. The curriculum engages each child's curiosity as she develops a firm grasp of fundamental skills and an awareness of the world around her. Cooperative learning experiences, open-ended questions, and varied problem-solving approaches promote analytical and critical thinking. The concepts learned and relationships formed in the Lower School last throughout a student's years at Chapin.
