Use of Technology in the Classroom
Chapins integration of technology throughout the school is a direct reflection of the schools commitment to educating for the future, ensuring that our students will become technologically astute leaders. The school provides access to and cultivates proficiency in constantly advancing computer and multimedia technologies. We aim to make the girls thoroughly aware of the computer: how to use it, how to create with it, how to program with it and how to organize with it. Technology enriches the curriculum, connecting to other classes and other departments. Instruction in Web design, Internet research, information literacy, spreadsheets, computer graphics, word processing, video editing and, of course, typing, help to make technology a real opportunity for every Chapin girl.
Laptop Immersion Program
Students in Class 6 at Chapin are offered a unique technological opportunity. Through the Laptop Immersion Program (LIP), each girl receives a laptop computer that she keeps with her for the entire year and uses in class. Class 6 courses are designed specifically to incorporate the laptops into discussions and activities, and the girls learn to do research from their machines, to take lecture notes on the computer, and to use various software programs to extend their grasp of academic subjects. Girls emerge from this immersion program with a broad base of technology skills and move into Class 7 and the Upper School as confident computer users.
Technology Integration Program
Students in Classes 1 through 3 learn about technology and increase their computer skills through the Technology Integration Program (TIP), which provides 60 computers for dedicated use in the Lower School. Project-based technological learning is integrated into the curriculum. The girls are well-prepared for TIP by their experiences in Kindergarten, when they take weekly computer classes in a lab and are introduced to basic computer concepts.
Faculty Training
Chapin faculty members are trained
to make the most of technology in their classrooms, incorporating coordinated Webquests, Powerpoint presentations, Inspiration diagrams, and spreadsheets into curriculum projects. A faculty trainer, dedicated to augmenting the teachers knowledge
of technology, helps to create projects that integrate computers into the classroom.
Teachers who act as technology pioneers then strive to pass on their knowledge
to the students, offering access to computers, the Internet, and multimedia
technologies in a trusted, protective environment. The use of technology generates
a sense of excitement in every discipline and every classroom.
